Feedback from our first screening

On Monday 16th January we had our first screening in our Media lesson. Although we hadn't finished editing we had to show what we had. The feedback we got from our peers and teachers reflected the quality of our video. Most of them said we needed to do a lot of work on it. Our teacher said we need to add a few split screens at the beginning to introduce the different dancers because someone who didn't know the narrative of the video wouldn't understand it from watching what we had. Another feedback was that when we filmed the church scene the people weren't really in the shot and we needed to have filmed the people in the shot tighter.

Most people also said that the performance of the dancers was good because it made the video look believable.
Our first screening showed us we definitely have a lot of work to do with our music video, but i think we have done well because before we started editing neither of us in my group really knew how to edit using Final Cut Pro.

Production Journal 15- Stages of my Digipak

These pictures are the stages of me whilst I was making my digipak. I already knew what I wanted to do before I started but I tried various themes to see which would look better.

Production Journal 14

In our recent media studies lesson we have started editing our music video. Initially, the other group member started doing and we both talked on how we wanted to edit it however I have started to edit it as well and we both found it hard at the beginning but we got used to how to edit and other techniques on Final Cut Pro. When we were editing we tried to follow the narrative in our storyboard as best as we can, but sometimes we realise its better to place some of the footage in different places because it didn't work as well if we followed the storyboard exactly.
As well as editing our music video we also have to do our digipaks and poster for our album promotion. We have both got different ideas for how we want our digipaks to look like.

Production Journal 13

During the holidays we scheduled to do the last part of filming of our music video with the dancers. Unfortunately we found out that one of the dancers was going on holiday so she couldn't join us on the day we were filming.
On the day we wanted to film which was Monday 18th December the weather became a disruption as it started raining and it became really windy. We decided to wait for the rain to stop but the dancers had places to be so we rescheduled. On the day we rescheduled on it also rained so we decided to postpone it till the next week when every dancer wasn't busy.

We filmed most of the dancers on thursday 29th of December but, one of the dancers did not show up and he wasn't taking part properly when we filmed the other scenes so we decide to stop using him in our music video and make do with the dancers and footage we already had because he didn't have time to give up to film with us.
Apart from the weather we also had an issue with the battery running out so we couldn't use the flip camera and we had to use a digital camera instead but, the quality of the video was really good with the camera.
Apart from that and the weather we didn't come across any other difficulties and next time we have to remember to take some spare batteries when we go out filming.

Production Journal 12 - Club Scene

Yesterday we filmed the club scene with all the dancers in, for our music video. I was in charge of directing again and my other team member was in charge of filming again because we thought that it worked better that way. We filmed this scene at school because it had a dark room with lighting that was sufficient for a club scene. We also gave the people at the club glowsticks. This scene was the hardest to film because the lighting was dark so when we were filming we thought the lighting was going to be really bad on film but watching it back it looks like exactly what we wanted.

Also, because we had so many people in this scene because it is our club scene, it was hard to direct a lot of people all at once.
We had to tell the dancers that were in our video what to do and at the same time we had to tell the extras that were in it what to do. Also we had trouble getting the DJ in the shot because he was at the far end of the room we were filming in. It was also hard to get everyone in a shot without it looking spacious because we wanted the club scene to look packed.
Overall, this scene went ok it wasn't as hard as we thought it would be before we filmed.

Production Journal 11 - Priscilla 2

On Saturday 10th we filmed the remaining part of Priscilla walking to church and seeing the DJ DELIRIOUS logos. This part of the video was filmed by the other member of the group and again I was directed Priscilla on what to do. This part was really easy but we had to film from various places.
The only hindrance we had was the wind blowing all the logos every time we stuck it somewhere. Apart from that filming on saturday went really well.

Production Journal 10 - Priscilla 1

On Friday 9th we filmed Priscilla's first dancing scene which was inside the church. During filming we realised the pastor we initially wanted to use was unavailable so we had to find a replacement immediately. I filmed part of the scene because I haven't filmed much of the whole video so I was filming this time.
I also told the actors and dancers what to do because so of them didn't know we had plans to film that day as they just showed up to church but they were fine with us filming.

Production Journal 9

Yesterday me and Sybill my other group member filmed Paula's dance scene in a dance studio. Overall filming was really good because we knew exactly what we wanted the dancers to do because we had previously informed them about it for a week so, they already practiced the dance. It took us roughly an hour to film everything in total. Firstly, we filmed Paula dancing in the dance studio with other dancers and we tried to get them from many angles so we have a variety of shots to choose from.

Lastly, we filmed Paula walking down the hill this is where we filmed her seeing the logos of DJ DELIRIOUS around the area. We had problems with people and cars going past and that set us back a couple of minutes so, it got dark whilst we were waiting for the people to walk past but overall we got a lot of footage we could choose from.

Production Journal 8

On Friday 2nd, we filmed the first of Lawrance's scene of our music video. I wasn't there at the beginning of filming because I had a lesson but the other member of my group was there to film. Filming went ok but we had a little difficulty trying to film from different angles because we were in a confined classroom and the tables in the classroom didn't allow us to move the tripod around. Also, we had to make sure that every time we changed angles all the props and people in the last shot remained the same so it didn't look awkward in the clip that we got.

We learnt from filming this scene that we have to direct the actors and dancers in the video properly so they know what to do, because they were a little bit confused when we started filming so, next time we need to keep informing them throughout filming on what exactly we need them to do.

Production Journal 7

Today Monday 28th November, we were supposed to film a dance scene with one one our dancers but unfortunately we couldn't do it today because the dancer was feeling a little ill and was too tired to do anything so we cancelled filming today. This is the second time we had to reschedule this dancers scene so me and my and other group member Sybill Scott decided to use somebody else for that scene and replace him. We have done a new schedule for all the filming and editing we will be doing over the next month.

Production Journal 6

Today we pitched our whole idea for our music video to the whole class and our Media Studies teacher. The pitch included details about your band/artist, including which record label they're signed to, what their ideology is and who their target audience is. Synopsis of the video, including details of performance and/or narrative elements, location shots and any costume images. Our animatic. An explanation of how we have used Goodwin's elements within the video. Lastly an explanation of why we have decided on this concept and how it will appeal to the target audience and 'fit' into the music industry.

Overall the pitch went really good and the only criticism we got from our teacher was that our target audience was too high because originally our target audience was ages 14-30 but we had to reduce it to ages 14-25. The people in our class generally had good things to say about it and they concluded that we were ready for filming.

Production Journal 5

Today we started to do our animatic of our storyboard on IMovie. We had to import the pictures of our storyboards onto the macs. We found out that we couldn't get all the shot on the camera because the types of shot and the length of shot weren't visible in the pictures we took. Also, when we first took the pictures they were blurry and then we changed the camera we were using and the quality of the pictures were better.

We also has difficulties timing each shot so it was all in time of the original track because the shots were a little long so we also had to shorten that.

Production Journal 4

Today we went out to take pictures of some of the location we are going to be filming at. The first place we went to was the location of the secret place the dancers are going to find at the end of the video. We had to ask for permission from the people who worked there before taking pictures to see if it would be ok to film there. When we started taking pictures we realized the lighting in the entrance of the location was a little bit dark, so we would have to make sure it is bright when we film.

We also, went to the location of the dance studio one of the dancers is going to be filmed at. The owners of the dance studio were ok with us filming as long as we don't film inside of the dance studio. We agreed because we only needed to film Paula who is in the video will only need to be shot going in the studio and then we will cut it so that she is in a dance studio at school.

Lastly we went to the pastor of the church we are going to be filming at to ask permission and write us a letter to see if it was ok to film inside the church. Although, we will only be filming in the youth church we wanted to see if it would be ok to film inside and if it was ok for the other members of church to be filmed as well.
We didn't really discover any other problems when we went to get evidence of recce apart from the ones stated above. The only things left to do is to finish our animatic and we would be ready to film.

Production Journal 3

In this week's lesson we started to draw each shots that we will film for our music video on opur storyboard. In my group we decided that we will write each shot down on paper first before we draw it on our storyboard because we didn't want to make any mistakes. Also, because both members of my group are not very creative so we are not very good at drawing, we found it a difficult trying to show what each shot will look like on the storyboard. That was the only difficulty we faced when drawing our storyboard.

We wrote down what each shot will look like on the storyboard beacuse of the lack of our ability to draw properly. Also, to make sure some of the shots we have match the lyrics, we printed out a copy of the lyrics but, next time when we draw our storyboard we have to make sure we download the song on our Ipods so we hear the song while we plan.

Audience Feedback

We pitched our Music Video ideas to our class and we got some feedback and what they thought was good, and what we needed work on.

We discussed who we were going to cast as DJ delirious to act as a DJ in our music video an we decided that we were going to use a member of staff at school who has an idea on how to run a club. We also discussed health&safety rules in the club shot because the room we are going to use has faulty lights on the ceiling so we would have to make sure the room was available to use when we need it because of the cast in our music videos.

We discussed the mise-en-scene in the room we are going to shoot in and the class suggested that we have to make sure all the things in the room we are going to film in should be cleared before we get there because otherwise the quality of the video won't be as good.
They also gave feedback on the cast and dancers in the video and they said that we would have to make sure a ll of them are committed before the day of shooting to avoid any inconveniences and people not turning up.

Lastly, our teacher told us that we would have to make sure the lighting in the room was stable and working and we also had to make sure that whilst shooting that the lighting was really good.

Production Journal 2

After we had chosen our briefs and the song we wanted to do, we had to do a moodboard in our lesson to show an idea of what we wanted to do in our video music. Although, we didn't have a set idea and concept because we knew that it could change along the way when we were doing our storyboards, we still had to do show what we had already thought it would look like.

In our moodboard we, wanted the feeling of dance to be obvious and we wanted it to have a club and party feeling. We chose to print out pictures of dancers, a DJ, clubs, bright lights, and people having a good time. We also printed out the lyrics of the song to show what each shots of the music video when the lyrics were playing so we wrote it next to the lyrics.
We also wanted to have the feeling of bright lights in a dark club so we used tissue paper to show the glow sticks. We printed out the image of a DJ because although, most DJ don't appear in House music videos we thought it would be better if he appeared in this music video because it is his first one and the viewers would be able to identify with him and know who he was.

Production Journal 1

When we first received our briefs, the first thing we had to do was go into groups and when we were pairing up we were trying to think of people we would work best with and people who would be able to contribute fairly in a group.

I ended up in a pair with a member of my class and we chose to do the House/Dance music genre because we thought it would be a bit hard to do a video for a girl group if it was just two of us.We then went on to think about a name for the DJ we were making a video for and that was a bit hard because we were trying to come up with something original that fitted the brief. In the end we went with the name DJ Delirious. After that, we decide to come up with a song that wasn't on the brief but most of the songs we thought of were either too recent or didn't really fit the brief.

We decided to the 2006 song by the group Booty Luv called - Boogie 2nite, and we had to make sure it was ok by our teacher before we started anything else.
